About me

Cuban-Canadian Film and Arts Professional.

Biography

I was born in the revolutionary Havana in 1982. Cuba was then perceived as a prosperous and fair society, but soon after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union. The island turned into a desperate and fierce version of itself that still is struggling to survive. Through Art and my old Soviet camera, I documented such reality.

In 2012, I graduated with an H.B.A. in stage design from the Cuban University of Arts. At the time, I had worked for various Cuban-National-Television-Crime-series episodes as a Co-Director (Second Unit Director) and Production Designer. Also, as an Art Director and Set Decorator in the Independent Audiovisual world, having the opportunity to work with the island’s most talented cast and crews. I also developed a 10-year-long career as a visual artist and stage, costume and props designer and creator in theatre, 8 of which were with the renewed Cuban theatre company Teatro de la Luna. I occasionally toured international theatre festivals.

In 2013, I emigrated to Toronto, Canada. I resumed my Visual Arts and Indie Film career in Toronto as a Set Decorator, Art Director and Production Designer. In 2016, I joined I.A.T.S.E. 873, working on many big-budget T.V. shows such as SUITS, Designated Survivor, American Gods, Y The Last Man, Painkiller, Titans, Borje and many others, assuming since 2020 the role of Set Dec Lead (Set Decoration Supervisor) and Set Decorator in early 2023 until Hollywood’s historical strike in May of the same year.

My passion for the visual arts pushed me to launch an arts newspaper, The Artist and The Viewer, Toronto Art Newspaper in 2018(-2020). At first, as a founder and Chief Editor, I was the all-man band. I wrote, designed, proofread and edited along with my wife. I also worked on the logistics of printing and distributing, plus photojournalism. It was an exciting time that I will never forget. By its closure due to the first wave of COVID-19, the publication was still accessible for free at T.T.C. stations and art venues, with many contributors, collaborators, and followers that continue to this day.

In 2021, I ventured into Quebec with my wife and daughters. As a proud immigrant dad, I wanted to provide my family with a safe, affordable, comfortable growing place. I expanded my career and entrepreneurial endeavours by founding in 2021 Alejandro Arts Inc., a company offering photography services to a broader public, both private and commercial.
